Lyrically Speaking for May 19

by Aaron

Normally when I think of music I love it’s by The Smashing Pumpkins but another band has emerged in the past few years that sounds similar but not ripped off: Silversun Pickups.

This band out of California has a lead singer with similar vocals to Billy Corgan and the band’s “sound” could easily be mistaken with classic Pumpkins’ by the casual listener. Their second album was one I loved so much I bought it a second time on vinyl just so it could grace my record player. If you’re into rock that sounds different but awesome, I think Silversun Pickups may be the band for you. If you like The Smashing Pumpkins then DEFINITELY check them out.

From the album Swoon, this is Panic Switch:

Time
It’s never worth my time
Blue shine
Bleeds into my eyes

I still
Sleep on the right side
Of the white noise
Can’t leave the scene behind

Could I be anything you want me to be
It’s always meant to be seen

When you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Can you fall asleep with a panic switch

And when you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Do you think she’ll sleep with the panic…

Mm, I’ll try
To hold on tight tonight
Pink slip
Inviting me inside
Wanna burn skin
And brand what once was mine
But the red views
Keep ripping the divide

If I go everywhere you want me to go
How will I know you’ll still follow
When you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Can you fall asleep with a panic switch

And when you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Do you think she’ll sleep with the panic…

I’m waiting and fading and floating away
I’m waiting and fading and floating away
I’m waiting and fading and floating away
Waiting and fading and floating

[Guitar Solo]

I’m waiting and fading and floating away
Waiting and fading and floating away
Waiting and fading and floating away
Waiting and fading, waiting and fading

When you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Can you fall asleep with a panic switch

And when you see yourself in a crowded room
Do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped
Will you step in line or release the glitch
Do you think she’ll sleep with the panic…

Last time the chosen lyrics were a bit out of left field for most people. The Calling is likely considered a ‘one hit wonder’ band and people don’t give them much of a second thought. This week we focus on a song that’s performed by a band with a extremely loyal following: Dave Matthews Band.

This song builds on itself similar to Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D (I’m sure there’s a technical musical term for this) with a mellow jam session. I don’t know why ‘Lie In Our Graves’ holds such a special place in my music collection but there’s something about the combination of melody and whimsical lyrics that come together to make something special. Also during the jam session, I always imagine a graduation speech or important words of wisdom being said with this song playing in the background. Perhaps you’ll envision it the same way.

From the album Crash this is Lie In Our Graves:

When I step into the light
My arms are open wide
When I step into the light
My eyes searching wildly
Would you not like to be
Sitting on top of the world with
Your legs hanging free
Would you not like to be ok, ok, ok?

When I’m walking by the water
Splish splash me and you takin a bath
When I’m walking by the water
Come up through my toes
To my ankles
To my head
To my soul
And I’m blown away

When I’m walking by the water
Splish splash me and you takin a bath
When I’m walking by the water
Come up through my toes
To my ankles
To my head
To my soul
And I’m blown away
I can’t believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Wondering if we had
Spent our living days well
I can’t believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Dreaming of things that we
Might have been

I can’t believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Wondering if we had
Spent our living days well
I can’t believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Dreaming of things that we
Might have been

Would you not like to be
I can’t believe that you
Would not like to be
Would you not like to be
Ok, ok, ok

Lyrically Speaking for April 28

by Aaron

Welcome back to the return of Lyrically Speaking! Since it’s been a while, I’ll quickly re-introduce this part of Copious Notes. Music is really poetry set to sound. It can inspire and really move us emotionally. The purpose of these posts is to help generate the spark of an idea that may hit you.

So with that said, today we’re featuring a song that happened to come up on my iPod last week that just has a great melody but also passionate lyrics. I’m not a big fan of middle-of-the-road generic rock but I make an exception for The Calling.

From the album Two this is Anything by The Calling:

I will be there
Always waiting
Waiting for you
To let me inside
Where your fire burns
In a city of angels
Just like a river rushing straight into the sea
I’m the one thing meant for you and you for me

[CHORUS:]
Whatever you want
Whatever you need
Whatever it takes, I’ll do anything

And as you sleep
Eyes to the window
I’m watching you dream
Well are you dreaming of me?
So why can’t you see
You’re all that matters
You know if this earth should crack
I’ll be your solid ground
I will be there to catch you when you fall down

[CHORUS]

If I have to crawl
Get down on my knees
Whatever it takes, I’ll go anything

I’d take the stars right out of the sky for you
I’d end the world give you the sun, the moon
For all of time, forever loving you

Whatever you need
Whatever it takes, I’ll do anything
If I have to crawl
Get down on my knees
Whatever it takes, I’ll do anything

Lyrically Speaking for December 4

As most of you already know, I am a big fan of Dido. Her first two albums are filled with great words and melodies that speak to me. I’m sure there are songs of hers that you specifically enjoy. Well two weeks ago she released her third album Safe Trip Home, bringing us a new bunch of songs to enjoy. So far I’ve have good times listening to the album but there is one track that really speaks to me. It is a bit long (8 minutes) of a repeating beat, but it’s mellow and really just sounds beautiful. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

From the album Safe Trip Home, this is Northern Skies:

i have returned to northern skies
where summer hasn’t touched
the clouds that pass above

i have returned to the sombre greys
of days too early to come
and too hurried to stay

i have left a million stars
and an ocean light and clearly blue

i have left the warmth of the sun
and a million adventures
not yet begun

for once there was beauty here for me
under the wide northern skies
and once there was magic here for me
under the wide northern skies

i saw trees as green
and this dark as blue
heartbreak and poetry
with deeper roots

but now i know
this is lonely country
and it leads me only back to the sea

for once there was beauty here for me
under the wide northern skies
and once there was magic here for me
under the wide northern skies x 2

Lyrically Speaking for October 23

by Aaron

I know what you’re thinking. “A Lyrically Speaking Post?? It’s only Thursday!” and you are correct if you’re surprised to see some musical poetry on the day before the end of the week. I’m a bit surprised that I wanted to post this series today, but there is good reason. What is that reason? You’ll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see!

For now, I want to bring it back to the music. One of my favorite artists is Dido and I love almost all her songs. She is up there in my book with The Smashing Pumpkins for powerful lyrics and music that can be listened to in almost any situation. She has happy, sad, longing and angry songs. She has a new album coming out in November and I am truly excited. I already pre-ordered it on iTunes and have heard three tracks through her website. So far, she hasn’t disappointed.

Today’s song from Dido is filled with anger and frustration. It’s a song about wanting to escape and move on with life. You can hear the way this song is sung that there is angst that comes through. Most of all, it’s powerful and I think most people can relate to wanting to ‘get out into the world’ and get away from it all. I find this song inspiring and most of all, great to listen to because the melody is paired perfectly with the lyrics.

From the album No Angel, this is Hunter.

With one light on
In one room
I know you’re up
When I get home
With one small step
Upon the stair
I know your look
When I get there

If you were a king
Up there on your throne
Would you be wise enough to let me go
For this queen you think you own

Wants to be a hunter again
I want to see the world alone again
To take a chance on life again
So let me go…

The unread book
And painful look
The TV’s on
The sound is down
With one long pause
Then you begin
Oh look what
The cat’s brought in

If you were a king
Up there on your throne
Would you be wise enough to let me go
For this queen you think you own

Wants to be a hunter again
I want to see the world alone again
To take a chance on life again
So let me go
Let me leave

For the crown you’ve placed upon my head
Feels too heavy now
And I don’t know what to say to you
But I’ll smile anyhow
And all the time I’m thinking
Thinking…

I want to be a hunter again
I want to see the world alone again
To take a chance on life again
So let me go

Lyrically Speaking for October 17

Hey it’s Friday everyone and I’m here to bring you another song that I think has great lyrics and also sounds great. This week, I bring you an interesting song that I didn’t know about a few months ago. As I’ve mentioned previously, I listen to Pandora a lot when I write and even when I’m just not into hearing my songs in iTunes. Pandora is fantastic and the fact that it’s free makes it one of the best web services out there.

This week I want to focus on the group O.A.R. which stands for Of A Revolution. This band has ‘hippie’ roots in their music where you will see people travel to see them and for me, personally it reminds me of Phish, The Grateful Dead, or even Dave Mathews Band. Pandora plays this song all the time since I’ve given it a thumbs up and I finally plunked down the $0.99 to buy it on iTunes. I figure if I like the song enough, I should give the band some money. Coming into work the other day, I got to really hear the lyrics and realized the track has some fun to it and is really enjoyable. I think you will all agree it’s a good song, but also the melody is nice too.

From O.A.R., this is Hey Girl:

I took this girl out last night and we left around 12,
We walked along lonely streets and got to know ourselves,
I like to read – she likes to write,
she likes to sleep – and I like to stay up all night,
My friends say I’m crazy and I agree,
but that’s okay that’s the way I like to be

Hey girl come with me and let yourself go
Hey girl come with me and let yourself go, go, go

I say now hey girl, come with me and let yourself go,
Hey girl come with me and let yourself go
I said hey girl, come with me, and let yourself go, go, go, let yourself go

we went out late that night and we danced through the night
I was holding on to her and she be gripping it tight she was
But she didn’t care, and I didnt mind
I was unaware that she liked to act so kind,
My friends say I’am crazy and I agree,
but thats okay cause thats the way I like to be

hey girl, come with me and let yourself go, come on, come on
hey girl come with me and let yourself go, go, go,
just let yourself go

Hush little baby dont say a word
i would like to give you evrything that you deserve
ill give you my heart ill give you all my soul
you can have all my money if you like you can control
in my mind i miss you every night that your not here
oh i just want to sit around your life and breath your air
and if i can not have you i just dont want to live
oh i got so much i would like to give

hey girl, come with me and let yourself go, come on, come on
hey girl come with me and let yourself go, go, go,
just let yourself go

Hey girl, but baby it all here just let yourself go
Hey girl, but baby but darlin let your self go
Hey girl, but baby but darlin i need to know
Hey girl, but my sweety but my lovely id love to let you go
Hey girl, but im comeing back for you and im looking to you girl

Hello and good Friday to everyone! Today I wanted to go a little more mellow with the song selection this week. I selected Yellowcard because many people don’t know their album Ocean Avenue had a lot of good songs besides what made it on the radio. I think you’ll all find this particular track to be mellow, inspiring and just a song to connect with. I’m keeping it short and sweet. I hope you all enjoy this selection.

From Yellowcard, this is One Year, Six Months

Sew this up with threads of reason and regret
So, I will not forget. I will not forget
How this felt one year six months ago
I know I cannot forget. I cannot forget

I’m falling into memories of you and things we used to do
Follow me there
A beautiful somewhere
A place that I can share with you

I can tell that you don’t know me anymore
It’s easy to forget, sometimes we just forget
And being on this road is anything but sure
Maybe we’ll forget, I hope we don’t forget

I’m falling into memories of you and things we used to do
Follow me there
A beautiful somewhere
A place that I can share with you

So many nights, legs tangled tight
Wrap me up in a dream with you
Close up these eyes, try not to cry
All that I’ve got to pull me through is memories of you
Memories of you
Memories of you
Memories of you

I’m falling into memories of you and things we used to do
Follow me there
A beautiful somewhere
A place that we can share
Falling into memories of you and things we used to do

The Weekender: Oct 3 – 5

by Aaron

Hey C.N. crew! I was thinking of starting up a new series here for everyone to enjoy during the weekends. Inspired by the NY Times, The Weekender is a series where I want to talk more in-depth or critically about writing, reading, current events that are writing related, etc. I hope that by posting a critical piece, it will not only be a good read but also be a post that will inspire you guys to post your thoughts and reactions. Additionally, I hope to invite guest bloggers to come over and participate. If you feel so inclined, please feel free to e-mail me or comment and we’ll go from there. I plan on posting The Weekender on Friday afternoons and have it encompass Copious Notes for three days. As for now, I hope you all enjoy this new series. Your feedback is always appreciated and encouraged.

“The writer’s duty is to keep on writing.” -William Styron

I think Styron was onto something when he wrote this. I wonder at times why we do what we do. Why do writers write? I’ve been trying to answer this question for months and I suspect that I am far from alone in this quest for answers. At times, at least for me, the drive is motivated by different things. Sometimes I can envision my work on the bookshelf at a store and it’s as clear as a picture in front of my face. At other times, the ideas and characters are screaming to get out of my brain and onto a piece of paper. Finally, yes sometimes I do think about the financial aspects to possibly not having a day-job and getting to realistically live with my craft as my income.

I think that secretly everyone wants to be famous. Everyone follows celebrities so closely and in my opinion it’s due to living vicariously through them. We want to have that Mercedes and the large house in L.A. We want to go out and be recognized. Personally, I think being an author is the best of both worlds because we get the money and the name out there, but we can still safely go out to the supermarket and not get mobbed. For me, that could be ideal.

Why do I write? I write because I have a desire to express myself creatively and the hopes that someone would actually pay money to have it. I have a drive to get my ideas out there and have them validated. We all want to be told we’re good at something. If it’s something we can create from nothing, I think that is a bigger validation than just doing good at the day-job. I also write because I know I can write better than the average person. I am not saying this to sound conceited but I do believe that my skill in writing is a cut above the rest. I believe that most of you Copious Notes readers on on-par with me or even better. I also believe you would agree that you can write better than the average person and you have a skill that most do not.

We all have drive and desire. One interesting thing that I think about is would my hand get really tired if I was conducting a book signing? Do people who autograph things use their actual signature or do they have an ‘autograph signature’? Odd things like this permeate my brain at times and I do laugh when I think of them because they are so odd. Being notable is nice but I think the fact that legitimate success is achievable by doing what we do is the ultimate goal. Again, it’s taking nothing and making it into something special and amazing.

I often think of Dan Brown sitting at a desk with a blank Word document in front of him. At some point in his life, he was just another guy surfing the ‘net and maybe even reading the AW forums to be involved. That blank document would become the Da Vinci Code and I have amazement that his great books at one point were just Word files on his computer that no one but him saw and it lived & died on this computer’s health. Did he ever lose part of his story? Did he know what he was writing would bring him lots of success?

I write because I want many things, but I also want self-satisfaction. To say that I have written a novel gives me great pride and I know this is something that most people only say they’re going to do and never do it. I’ve done it and I’m already working on the next. These accomplishments make me feel good and I hope that I can one day share them with the world.

So you tell me….. why do *you* write?
