Of Steve Jobs, Earthquakes & Hurricanes

by Aaron

This past week has been rife with things completely unrelated to writing. So much has occurred that I felt a blog post was necessary even though Copious Notes is a place I normally talk about what I’m working on.

Earthquake
Last Tuesday began as an ordinary day where we all headed to work and went about our business. Then around 1:30 PM Eastern time, my building shook. To say it was surreal feeling is an understatement. Here in New York we don’t get earthquakes. It’s beyond rare. I’ve lived here my entire life and this is the only time it’s happened in my time on this planet.

It triggered a range of emotions that I am sure everyone else went through: confusion, embarrassment (that it was just me and I was going nuts), concern, and then calm. In the end it was a 5.8 and felt along the entire east coast from Virginia and northward. Luckily there was no damage here and everyone was fine.

Afterwards I realized that a major component of my book deals with an earthquake. If I can take anything from this experience, it’s counting the event as research for the series!

Steve Jobs
If the week wasn’t crazy enough from the earth shaking, we then moved into the news that rocked the technology industry: Steve Jobs announced his resignation from Apple. While this news was out of nowhere, it was neither surprising or something completely unexpected. It was really a matter of “when” and not “if”. It saddened me to know that someone who single-handedly changed the world twice-over was now calling it quits due to his health. I’ve never hid the fact that I’m a big Apple fan but no one can debate the impact that the Mac, iPod, iPhone and iPad have made on the world.

As a creative person, Mac’s are essential to my work and I’d never want to write on a PC or anything else. My Scrivener software is a shining example of how things just work and get you to work better. I know that Apple is a very different company than it was in 1985 when Steve Jobs left the first time but I cannot help but feel a sense of mystery to see if the company I love to love, can continue to be larger than life.

Hurricane Irene
We are only two-days removed since Irene struck the Northeast portion of the US. Luckily I do not live in a flood zone and somehow, by the grace of god we did not lose power. Many of my friends and colleagues were not so lucky. Stories of people needing to evacuate filled my Twitter and Facebook streams while I hear plenty of recounts of people having to pump their basements while purging their refrigerators of everything.

Luckily the storm was on a path that let everyone prepare as much as possible. It hit and we got through it. Preparation was key. That helped a lot of people get through it too. We’ll never be immune from what mother nature throws at us but it’s incredible to see that even when the power is out, people still manage to get connected to the Internet and let us know they’re okay.

So, how was your week? I’d love to know how you dealt with these unprecedented events in the comments.

Working The Formats

by Aaron

Wow, talk about a whirlwind of activity! Since announcing As Darkness Ends last week, I have been really busy. First, I want to thank everyone for stopping by, commenting here and also for passing on their excitement via Facebook and Twitter. I know this project came out of nowhere but as of three months ago I had no idea I was even going to embark on this self-publishing adventure.

This past week had me finishing up the last of my edits (a moment in which I did a happy dance) and then began the tedious work of adding content, preparing the layout and exporting to different formats. I wax poetic about Scrivener all the time but in my experience, its weakness lies in its ‘compile’ feature. This is supposed to be a one-stop-shop in exporting a manuscript into any format you need and just the way you want it. It’s an area that needs work because if I remember correctly, I compiled the manuscript at least 20 times before getting it right. More on that another day.

I’ve set some important wheels into motion including: getting a Facebook fan page set up, making updates to the ADE’s section of this site and prepping the files at Amazon, B&N, Smashwords and CreateSpace.

Finally, I announced on Friday that I am giving away a limited number of ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) of the book to a select few. If you’d like to read the book before it comes out AND have my never-ending gratitude, there’s still time to click here and sign up!

There’s plenty more to talk about in the upcoming weeks leading up to September 7th so stay tuned!

I Have Big, Big News

by Aaron

Today is a day I’ve been waiting to blog about for over a month. I’ve moved carefully and begun laying the groundwork for this day in which I have big news: I am publishing a book…. next month!

Click the cover or here to learn more about the book

You may notice that amazing image above. That my friends is the cover to Book One of my new series: As Darkness Ends. I’ve been secretly working on this book for two months and it’s been hard to not say anything when I’m so excited. I totally want to do a happy dance right now.

As Darkness Ends is a planned 6-book series of short stories recounting the end of the world. Each book will tell the story from a different point of view, all in a different place and some will even be in a different time.

This is a project I’m very happy about and I’m excited to share it with you all. So, when can you get your hands on a copy? I’m still hammering out the details but the tentative release date is September 7th! I’m also getting things in place to perhaps get copies out sooner to a select few.

There’s a lot more to announce but I’m not going to play all my cards in one blog entry, so stay tuned!

Doing the Heavy Lifting

by Aaron

I’ve been quiet… too quiet. But that’s a good thing right now. The wheels are spinning and there’s a lot happening just under the surface. My writing is going very strong right now and I am very close to a major announcement here.

August is going to be a fantastic month and September will be even better. Exciting times are ahead. I hope your eReader is ready!

I’m Going Analog (Sometimes)

by Aaron

Ain’t she a thing of beauty? Yeah, that’s an Olivetti Studio 45 typewriter. I had never heard of Olivetti until a couple of weeks ago when I was gathering news information for my podcast. I came across that article and when I hit #12, I fell in love.

The Olivetti Studio 45 is probably the best example I can find of a retro device. It screams analog and the fact that it’s a typewriter means it has the gears to back that claim up. I stalked a few for a while and last week I finally scooped one up on eBay for a paltry sum. It should be at my door (hopefully) by the end of the week.

So what do you do with a typewriter? Aren’t I the guy who lives and dies by Scrivener and my iPad? The answer is plans. I have some great plans for the machine that are not only creative but unique. More to come on that front very soon.

For now, I have a fresh ribbon to install. :-)
