Lyrically Speaking for May 11th

by Aaron

Good Sunday to everyone! This week, Lyrically Speaking makes a comeback with a song that’s been almost a daily-listen for me. Sometimes you take a chance on a band based on a song you hear on the radio. In my case, this is with the band Linkin Park.

Now to say that I really don’t like them, would be an understatement. I’ve never really ‘gotten’ their music and felt they were too much of a sell-out. I heard the song “Shadow of the Day” on the radio because my iPod adaptor broke and it was all I had when driving into work. I didn’t know it was Linkin Park and was surprised to hear they had a new sound. This was enough for me to give their new album a try. Sure enough, there’s some good stuff on there.

One song in particular is very inspiring and is also political. The lyrics are obvious and I must say that the song is effective in generating emotions as I listen. I think that the words are powerful and reflective of the current state of America. The melody and light-rapping style make this even more powerful.

From Linkin Park, this is Hands Held High:

Turn my mike up louder I got to say something
Light weights step to the side when we come in

Feel it in your chest the syllables get pumping
People on the street they panic and start running

Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming
I jump in my mind and summon the rhyme, I’m dumping

Healing the blind I promise to let the sun in
Sick of the dark ways we march to the drum and

Jump when they tell us that they wanna see jumping
Fuck that I wanna see some fists pumping

Risk something, take back what’s yours
Say something that you know they might attack you for

Cause I’m sick of being treated like I have before
Like it’s stupid standing for what I’m standing for

Like this war’s really just a different brand of war
Like it doesn’t cater the rich and abandon poor

Like they understand you in the back of the jet
When you can’t put gas in your tank

These fuckers are laughing their way to the bank and cashing the cheque
Asking you to have compassion and have some respect

For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay

And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
In their living room laughing like “what did he say?”

[Chorus:]
Amen
Amen
Amen
Amen
Amen

In my living room watching but I am not laughing
Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen

World is cold the bold men take action
Have to react or get blown into fractions

Ten years old it’s something to see
Another kid my age drugged under a jeep

Taken and bound and found later under a tree
I wonder if he had thought the next one could be me

Do you see the soldiers they’re out today
They brush the dust from bullet proof vests away

It’s ironic at times like this you pray
But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday

There’s bombs in the buses, bikes, roads
Inside your market, your shops, your clothes

My dad he’s got a lot of fear I know
But enough pride inside not to let that show

My brother had a book he would hold with pride
A little red cover with a broken spine

On the back, he hand-wrote a quote inside
When the rich wage war it’s the poor who die

Meanwhile, the leader just talks away
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay

And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
both scared and angry like “what did he say?”

[Chorus x6]

[x6]
With hands held high into the sky so blue,
As the ocean opens up to swallow you.

Goodbye Writers Group: Round 2

by Aaron

Yesterday I blogged extensively about my departure from my writing group. To clarify, I was kicked out. I will preface this post (as I did with yesterday’s entry) that this story is my side and filled with my opinion. I’m sure the owner of the meetup sees it differently.

I left off yesterday’s entry with the e-mail I was sent by the groups owner. I feel he does have valid reasons for not wanting me in the group. Because I felt the situation was delicate, I thought long and hard about the reply I would send. Not to ruin the outcome, but it did no good. I might as well have typed an e-mail to my dog. His mind was already made up and there was nothing I could do about it.

Before I post my response, I want to give you some personality background on the owner. All his submissions have a ‘copyright’ entry on the header. I’m not really sure why. Additionally he made the submission process pretty complicated if you don’t have the e-mail addresses of those attending.

Here’s where the frustration brews. The last meetup I did attend, I didn’t have the e-mail addresses for everyone who was going. I sent the following e-mail:

**Name removed,

Do you have the e-mail addresses of everyone coming next week? i’d like to send my submission directly to them.

Thanks.

-Aaron

I got a reply shortly thereafter of:

Aaron,

I don’t release people’s email addresses without their
permission. There’s only one other person signed
up besides you and me who’ll be attending.
When you send your stuff to me, I’ll send
a copy along to him.

Glad to hear you’ve got something coming.

Fantastic, I thought. The next month when I was in the same situation (different people were coming) I asked for him to forward my work on. I was met with a different reply:

Here is my submission. Can you please forward it to all who are attending?

Thanks.

-Aaron

His reply:

Aaron,

1) You can use the group mailing list to send your manuscript.
Instructions for using the mailing list are on the Meetup.com site. Simply log in and go to the group’s home page.

2) You can obtain individual email addresses from group members if you want to send you manuscript that way. I tried, and could not
obtain individual email addresses from **name removed and **name removed.

3) I’ve decided not to assume personal responsibility for forwarding manuscripts to every member of the group.

Hope that helps.

Just a quick clarification that option 1 sends my work to everyone, not just people attending the meetup. I don’t want to send my work to everyone and spam them. I also don’t want to send it to just anyone since I don’t know who they are. Option 2 doesn’t really work if I have no way to contact the person.

Option 3 is the kicker. You gotta love it.

So without further delay, here is my response from the owners e-mail that I posted about yesterday:

Thanks for e-mailing me. Perhaps if I explain the reasons things
happened the way they did, it may clear some things up.

First, I had every intention of making it yesterday for the meet-up.
I had both yours and Mary’s work read and comments written down. I
had purchased my tickets with my mother’s frequent flyer miles and
because the names weren’t the same on the tickets, the airline gave me
problems with putting tickets in my name. I was to be back in New
York as of 2:00 pm yesterday, which would have given me plenty of time
to make it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get back until 10 this morning.

Secondly, because I was not home, I had limited access to my e-mail
and internet, only through my phone. The ability to send my work out
was limited to only re-sending my submission from last month that
didn’t get used. Unfortunately, a side-affect of this is that it
includes everything else from the original message. If I could have
removed everything except the attachment, I would have, but doing this
all on a cell phone is extremely difficult and limiting. If Mary was
confused, she did not reply to me at all or ask me if I had sent
something in error. I had no reason to believe she would have been
confused. Also, you made no mention of it until now, when the e-mail
was sent days ago. I would have gladly explained anything to you or
answer and questions if they had been asked. Is it only a problem
because I wasn’t able to make the meet-up?

I understand that my decision to not attend last month may not have
been for the best reasons, and I apologize if you were offended in any
way. That was not my intention. I do agree that me not coming does
take up a seat that should be available, but at the same time last
month’s and this past meetup were not even 50% filled. Additionally,
I do apologize for taking up time you put into reading and critiquing
my work. I know the effort and time it takes to read submissions and
I agree it was wrong of me to do that.

I feel that this writers group is a good one and that this is a fun
group to be a part of. The overall goal is to have a good time and
‘talk shop’ with other writers. I would hope that a hobby and
side-activity we all feel passionate about is something that could
remain fun and also remain something I can be a part of.

Bottom line: This whole thing is supposed to be fun and not work.

Thanks.

-Aaron

Stay tuned for more of the shenannigans!

Goodbye Writers Group

by Aaron

For days I’ve worked on how I would phrase this blog entry. I figure that I’ll just state the facts and then proceed to give my opinions lower down, for people who want to know more if you’re interested. So here goes:

I have been kicked out of my writers group.

The story, from my perspective:

My writers group has been a fantastic sourse of networking and information. I have used it to get my writing going and it’s inspired me that I may actually have the skills to get my work published. But with all groups of people, there are different personalities. Unfortunately my personality clashes with the ‘owner’ of the group.

The reason I put the word owner in quotes is because the group is through meetup.com, a fantastic site for organizing groups. You do have to pay a small fee to run a group so technically there is an owner who administers the whole thing. The meetup went as follows: a week before we meet, everyone e-mails their submissions to the group. We all read them, print them out, and proceed to give feedback at the actual physical location we meet. I attended 4 or 5 meetups and they went very well. The group was maxed out at six people per event to keep it small. I got to read good writing and it was nice to have some professional feedback.

Here’s where it started to go down-hill. For whatever reason people were not able to make the meetups and only a day before it was to be just myself and the owner. Since I felt this was a waste of time, I bailed out and set my RSVP to a no either the night before or the same day. I admit it wasn’t the best move, but I figured there’s no reason to go if it’s just two people.

Fast forward to April where I RSVP yes. A few days before, realizing I didn’t have access to a computer, I find a past unused submission and forward it to the group via my iPhone. This original message had the owners previous submission on it that I was not able to edit out, due to e-mailing from a cell phone. Apparently that was a bad move. The day of the meetup, I have a hang-up at the airport and I end up spending an extra night down south that causes me to miss the meetup. I wasn’t even in the same state. I e-mail the owner to let him know what is going on and that I cannot make it, and I apologize. I get no response.

A few days later, I get a lengthy e-mail. Rather than paraphrase, I’m posting it. I’ve taken out his name because I guess I should

Subject: I’d appreciate it if you’d consider joining another writing group.

Aaron,

I’d appreciate it if you’d consider joining another writing group,
rather than continuing to attend the Suffolk County Writers
Workshops.

One group to consider is Amateur Writers of Long Island:

You’ve been a no-show at the last two meetings. And while
it’s no one’s fault that you were bumped from your plane, your
prior no-show was rooted in the explanation that there weren’t
enough people coming to the meeting.

No-shows, as you know, take seats from others who might attend a meeting, and reflect badly on the group for people who do make
the effort to attend.

A no-show also wastes people’s time, in that people go to the trouble
to critique your work and discuss that work with you in person, only
to find that you don’t show up for the meeting.

In addition, your decision to forward Part 6 of my work to Mary
by email because it was too much trouble for you to create a fresh
email to the group was troubling to me, and confusing to Mary.
Mary showed up to the meeting with copies of Part 1 and Part 6,
unsure which Part she was supposed to have critiqued.

I also didn’t appreciate the fact that you forwarded my original
work to someone without my permission. Not cool.

Bottom line: I think you’ll be happier in another group.

Best of luck.

-**Name Removed**

I think this post is long enough as-is, so I’ll post more tomorrow including my response. This is a true clash of personalities and in my opinion someone who has an ego problem and takes things way too seriously.

When the Drive is in Neutral

by Aaron

My writing has still been non-existant and I believe I haven’t written a single word in almost a month. Of course I can attribute this to some reasons and even make excuses about my move. Yes they are valid but only to a point. I will say that the two of the past three weeks have been filled with moving, a quick trip down south and other time-consuming things, but this past week has had a little more free time. Unfortunately that time has been filled with World of Warcraft, some TiVo and also Mario on the Wii. Writing has not taken a front seat on my priorities list.

Another reason for the struggle is with Mars. This is a book I was hoping would become the second novel I write but I have had major issues with it, and it’s not even started. The past few times I’ve sat down to write it, it’s been a complete struggle. Bottom line: I’m not feeling it. This is quite dissapointing though because I wrote the opener one day and brought it to my old writing group. It was well recieved and I thought it was a fantastic jumping-off point for the book. The subsequent pages have not followed suit.

I believe some of the issues lay with my internal debate as to what genre I want to write. Instinctively I’m a sci-fi guy but I also have it in my head that things in that genre aren’t as marketable. I’m sure I’m completely wrong but this debate has caused me to second-guess the plot of the story. I have a sci-fi idea but also a normal fiction idea dealing with being away from home.

I’ve come to a crossroads where I must decide what I’m going to do before proceeding with Mars. I must scrap it, put it aside and begin another project or figure out what the hell I want to write. I refuse to fight with myself and feel forced to get 60k words down on the page. Writing is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Forcing myself to proceed will just make it painful.
