Still Editing

by Aaron

So I’ve spent the past three hours editing my robert story and I’ve made some decent progress. I’ve found that a lot of my editing has been making lists of certain areas of the story to see where they happen and to make sure it’s balanced and not too much of one part.

The editing has three main things that I need to work on:

1. I have a sub-plot that I don’t know if I should keep or not. I’ve dropped parts of it in the story and I can’t tell if it should stay and get expanded or just be cut.

2. The final chapter needs to be expanded. I have a lot of wrapping up in the final chapter and it happens in only three pages. I think I need to slow it down, expand it and even break it up into 2 chapters if needed.

3. The title. Can I friggin’ think of one already?!!?

On another note, I have no idea what is going on with the blog carnival, so I apologize for no posts this morning. I am going to try to come up with an alternative friday item to post so next week is covered. The always helpful Auria Cortes has given me some ideas, including a ‘Friday Feast’ she participates in.

So that’s it for now. I’m updating the sidebar of the blog to include my new page / word counts and I’m going to edit for another 20 min.

Thursday Thirteen #131

by Aaron

Happy Thursday everyone! I’ve been busier than normal this week with my day job, which has meant a slowing of updates here. I am looking for that to change beginning today. With that said, here is this weeks Thursday Thirteen.

This week, I focus on motivation and what you can do to get your pen to the paper.

Thursday 13
Thirteen Things about motivation to write by Aaron Crocco

1. Watch the movie ‘Stranger Than Fiction’.

2. Listen to the Beatles or John Lennon.

3. Carry a journal with you at all times and write every day, even if it’s a three minute free-write.

4. Know that most people can’t ever do what you’re doing. You have talent and you don’t suck. Writing is impossible for many. You are the few, the proud.

5. Find a TV show in the genre you’re writing and watch a few episodes on DVD. A well-written show helps me out a lot in giving me ideas and also showing me I can do this too.

6. Use Pandora to create a radio station of music you like to have playing when you write. You’ll hear songs you like and discover new music without even trying. All music it thinks you like are based on scientific properties of the songs. It helps me a lot and it’s free.

7. Stuck? Write one paragraph. Just one. Go eat lunch and write a second.

8. Never let it feel like a chore.

9. Current events can help build a scene you’re stuck on. Remember there’s tons of news from around the world that could fit into your story.

10. Distracted easily? Unplug your internet before you write. Turn off the phone too while you’re at it.

11. If you type well, close your eyes and imagine the scene as you go. It helps build a flow.

12. Talk to any other writer and they’ll inspire you easily.

13. Blogging always helps.

Working on the beast

by Aaron

Writing

My procrastination for editing my untitled story came to a head tonight and I finally forewent TiVo and got some much-needed editing done. I’m using a great little program called TaskPaper to keep a running list of items to work on. As I reference an item, I make edits to the list entry and it’s been helping me so far. If you’re looking for a fantastic, yet simple to-do list program, this is it.

I worked for about an hour and a half and was able to get some important items taken care of. First, I deleted all scene changed that were separated by a line in the middle of the page. On 99% of them, I just made a new chapter and on a couple, I just continued the chapter it was on but added another paragraph space, so there are 2 instead of 1.

I had submitted one of my chapters to my writers group a few months ago that deals with a fight between Robert and his nemesis. The chapter got good reviews but my structure and wording didn’t. The biggest gripe was that I opened the chapter with the dictionary’s definition of ‘impact’ and then proceeded to use it multiple times. I can gladly say that I have used the handy search tool to weed out any uses of this word and replace them with other synonyms. I also re-worked the definition style at the top of the chapter. Overall, I think it works better.

So that’s what I got. Another good side to this editing is that the book has actually grown a little! I never thought that would happen, as I believed you only paired down a book during this process, but I stand corrected. I have gone from 123 pages to 127 pages, and from 57,631 words to 57,754 words. I gained 2,000 ‘words’ using the 250 x page numbers method, bringing my ‘word count’ to 63,500.

Overall, a productive evening. Time for home made ice cream and some Chuck on TiVo.

It’ll Make You Feel Legitimate

by Aaron

Moleskine

Anyone even remotely interested in writing will tell you that you should always have something on you to write on. This should be a journal or pad that you carry around at all times. I agree with this advice (though I don’t follow it too often) and I think there are good ways to go about this.

When I first met my wife, she bought me a leather-bound journal that is small and compact. The pages are slightly yellowed and it just has an old-world feel to it. To help, I use a more ‘inky’ pen that has a scratchy feel to it. The blotchy-ness of the ink and the feeling of the point against the pages brings me great joy. I love how rough it makes my writing come out.

I don’t know where she got the journal but I love it. She also put a quote in it from Langston Hughes, though because I don’t have it on me at the moment, I can’t reference it.

Anyhow…. you need something inspiring to write in to help be inspired. I think that having a nice artsy journal helps make you feel more like a real writer, and in-turn builds the drive. That’s where the Moleskine comes in.

I’ll let you read the info below but I think everyone should get one and it’s really a great tool to have in your arsenal. They’re not expensive and easy to find online. I plan on getting one at some point, once my current journal is filled.

From Wikipedia:
Moleskine (pronounced /mɔleˈskin/) is a brand of notebook manufactured by Moleskine srl, an Italian company. Although the name implies otherwise, the notebook is in fact not bound in moleskin, but in oilcloth-covered cardboard. Other distinct features also include an elastic band to hold the notebook closed and a sewn spine that allows it to lie flat when opened.

The modern Moleskine is fashioned after Bruce Chatwin’s descriptions of the notebooks he used and is not a direct descendant of the original moleskine. Chatwin used similar notebooks constantly throughout his travels, and wrote about them glowingly. His original source of notebooks dried up in 1986, when his Paris stationer informed him that the last moleskine manufacturer, a small family-run firm of Tours, had discontinued production that year after the death of the owner.

Aside from Moleskine, there are now a number of companies that produce notebooks similar to Chatwin’s description, including Lama Li Travel Journals, and Hand+Book Journals.

Lyrically Speaking

by Aaron

iTunes 7 Logo

This week I’m changing it up a bit and bringing you music from one of my favorite artists: Dido. Dido is a very interesting artist, as she sings songs that are truly from the heart but they are mixed with music that can sound like folk, rock, techno or even a ballad. Anyone who’s listened to one of her CD’s will know what I’m talking about.

If you’re looking for inspiration on the romance (regardless if it’s good or bad) then you should check her out.

Here is See the Sun from Dido:

I’m comin’ ’round to open the blinds
You can’t hide here any longer
My God you need to rinse those puffy eyes
You can’t last here any longer

And yes they’ll ask you where you’ve been
And you’ll have to tell them again and again

And you probably don’t want to hear tomorrow’s another day
Well I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And you’re asking me why pain’s the only way to happiness
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again

Come on take my hand
We’re going for a walk, I know you can
You can wear anything as long as it’s not black
Please don’t mourn forever
She’s not coming back

And yes they’ll ask you where you’ve been
And you’ll have to tell them again and again

And you probably don’t want to hear tomorrow’s another day
Well I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And you’re asking me why pain’s the only way to happiness
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again

Do you remember telling me you found the sweetest thing of all
You said one day this was worth dying for
So be thankful you knew her at all
But it’s no more

And you probably don’t want to hear tomorrow’s another day
Well I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And you’re asking me why pain’s the only way to happiness
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again
And I promise you you’ll see the sun again
I promise you you’ll see the sun again

See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again

See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again

Optimism? I think not

by Aaron

Eclipse

Rebecca Laffar-Smith posted about endings to a book for the Absolute Write Blog Chain Challenge. In her post she says she ends her romance novels with a little optimism that quickly fades.

When it comes to writing, I think that I don’t really write optimistically. My two current books have dark themes. The Robert Story is about a teenager bullied to his breaking point, while Mars opens with New York City in ruins. Most of the things I’ve written for my classes in college were dark and usually apocalyptic. Even my senior composition was about the end of the world.

Why do I write dark? I don’t know the root of the drive but I think that by ‘going there’ you get people who want to read as a guilty pleasure, just as people *have* to look at a car accident as they pass. One prime example is the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica that is currently on Sci-Fi. the show is nothing like the original and is very dark, dealing with the annihilation and persecution of the human race.

Regardless of the subject matter, I write. That’s what counts.

Time Lapse

by Aaron

I’m not sure how many daily readers I have here (I suspect few) but if you are someone who comes here looking for new posts, I need to apologize for nothing yesterday and today. My Friday’s are scheduled for the blog carnival post but it seems the woman who’s running it has had issues accessing the posts and never put it together. I waited all day for her to post it, but nothing showed up. So yesterday was a complete bust.

On top of this, I completely forgot a blogchain that I’m participating in. Not only is it my turn, but I didn’t even post on everyone else’s blogs yet (as required for participation). Life has been just a little busy and my drive to edit has waned slightly in the past couple of days. Even as I’m writing this, I feel cold and tired even though I slept for ten hours last night. I think my two consecutive nights of staying up until 2:00 am and getting up at 8:00 am have caught up with me.

So…. where does that leave us? Nowhere. :-) I plan on getting my blogchain post up tonight and making my round of comments. The blog carnival will just have to take a pass this week, as I think it’s not coming. As for my untitled story…… it’s still untitled.
