Thursday Thirteen #134

by Aaron

Another happy Thursday to everyone out there! This week has been busy on the writing front but slow on the blogging-side. Yesterday’s national holiday (AKA my birthday) gave me a break but I’m looking to get some big editing done tomorrow on my day off.

On this week’s Thursday Thirteen, I’m focusing on inspiring movies. I think there’s tons out there that want you to get your butt in the chair. I hope you enjoy.

Thirteen movies to get you to write by Aaron Crocco

1. 300. If you’re into war themes, this is the ultimate.

2. Stranger Than Fiction. Great movie that is funny and inspiring.

3. The Shawshank Redemption. No movie I know of has ever been as well-rounded as this one.

4. Back to the Future. My favorite movie of all time but also a classic story that has drama, comedy, sci-fi, and great writing.

5. Lord of the Rings (entire trilogy). I know watching these three movies will take nine years but it’s worth it.

6. What Dreams May Come. Very interesting movie that deals with the afterlife.

7. The Matrix. No movie throws you for a loop like this one. You don’t have to enjoy cyber-punk to see the themes in this one.

8. Toy Story. If you’re looking for the best balance of kid-oriented & suitable for adults then look no further. Anyone of any age can enjoy this and be inspired by a story of friendship.

9. Star Wars. Classic fairytale story, sci-fi goodness.

10. National Treasure. This alternate-history / mystery movie is fun and gets you wondering how you can write something similar.

11. Saving Private Ryan. This movie shows the value of brotherhood.

12. Miracle. If you love inspiring movies and hockey, this is the ultimate rush.

13. Terminator 2. One of the best sequels out there and again addresses many themes. The great action doesn’t hurt either.

Monday One

by Aaron

So on the last Thursday Thirteen, it seemed I was called out on ‘I don’t feel like it’ and ‘not feeling it’ as the same thing. That means I owe you all another item for my list.

So…here goes:

#13: I’m too busy reading the Amazon Kindle delivery forums. I know my Kindle is at least 2-3 weeks out from even shipping but I’m still obsessed with getting it and I check my order every day.

Working the Ends

by Aaron

Edited Document

I spent most of Friday working on my Robert story and focusing on a major item on my to-do list: the final chapter. This chapter is kind of a wrapping up of the loose ends and it’s something I’m finding somewhat difficult. Specifically, I’m trying for it to not sound rushed nor try to cram too much information into it. The first thing I did was split it into two chapters. I saw that the bulk of the chapter dealt with items relating to most of the climax but then there were items wrapping up a sub-plot. The sub-plot was moved to a new final chapter and I am going to need to expand it.

The now second-to-last chapter was something that I feel flows better and I’ve bulked it up pretty well. I need to give it another once-over but I think it’s damn good in its current form. I’m going to focus on the now-final chapter when I edit next time (hopefully tonight) and work on expanding it. All I did was cut & paste the text into this new area and I haven’t touched it. This new end consists of two paragraphs. Hopefully by the time I’m done with it, it’ll be about two pages. I’m also thinking of turning it into an epilogue but I don’t know if that is even worth it. Aren’t those cliche?

For now, the editing is going well. Still no title, but I’m adding bulk to the story. Every time I turn around, my word count has grown. I remember reading that a book really adds words during the editing process and I didn’t believe it at all. Only until I began this process did I see it’s totally true. I always associated editing with cutting out things but with each word or sentence I delete, I’m adding twice that. I hope this all comes through to my beta readers and on the final draft when it’s published.

We shall see.

Friday Feast for Feb 22

by Aaron

I’ve been editing most of the day and my wordcount shows it, with me gaining another 400 words today. I’m heading back to that in a bit. For now, here is this week’s Friday Feast:

Appetizer

Have you ever played a practical joke on anyone? If so, what did you do and who was your victim?
Nothing too crazy really. I’m boring on this one.

Soup

What do your salt and pepper shakers look like?
White and wavy. They match my dishes.

Salad

Where is the next place you plan to visit (on vacation or business)?
It’s looking like South Carolina to visit my mom.

Main Course

What kind of lotion or cream do you use to keep your hands from getting too dry?
None.

Dessert

Make up a dessert, tell us its ingredients, and give it a name.
I’m actually making ice cream right now, Ben & Jerry’s Ben’s Chocolate. I’m sure the recipe is online so you can see how it’s made. That’s all I got for this one.

Thursday Thirteen #133

by Aaron

Happy Thursday everyone! My writing schedule has been crap this week, mostly due to getting sidetracked with stupid things. I only resumed editing the Robert Story last night. The good news is that I added 400 words. I have some lame excuses and I figured I’d share them with you all. With that said, here is this weeks Thursday Thirteen.

Thursday 13
Thirteen lame excuses I had this week not to write. By Aaron Crocco

1. Lost is on. I’m sorry but the thought of 4,8,15,16,23, and 42 still drive me nuts.

2. World of Warcraft. This MMORPG is a time-stealer, especially when some of the guys from work want to play.

3. I don’t feel like it. This is the lamest reason ever.

4. I don’t have time. I think my TiVo is to blame for this.

5. I don’t know what part to work on in my book.

6. I’d rather surf the internet. As if eight hours of doing that at work wasn’t enough.

7. Nintendo Wii & Guitar Hero III.

8. It’s more important to download bootlegs of Smashing Pumpkins concerts I’ve been to.

9. I want to spend time with my wife. This is not lame, it just takes up time. I’m not complaining by any means. I love spending time with her.

10. I’ll say it now, even though I don’t have it yet my Kindle will be killing time.

11. It’s hockey season. It’s super important I watch all 82 games of the NY Islanders. :-)

12. I get home too late from work to write (7:00 pm)

13. I’m not feeling it.

The Carnival Has Moved On

by Aaron

It looks like the JustWrite Blog Carnival I was participating in is not being updated any more and it’s dying a slow death. On the advise of Auria Cortes, I’m switching exclusively to Friday Feast for my Friday posts. Hope you guys enjoy it.

We Interrupt This Blog

by Aaron

UPDATE: WordPress has been down most of the day, so I was only able to update the post now, to get the video to display. Sorry about that!

This has nothing to do with writing and more to do with our normal everyday frustrations with computers. If you’ve ever had a bad Windows experience (I had my fair share, which is why I’m a mac guy now) then you’ll appreciate this.
